Air conditioner Maintenance

Red Flags That Your Cooling System Needs Attention

Most of us take our air conditioning systems for granted. They keep us cool when they’re supposed to, so we rarely give them a second thought.

However, your AC unit may be sending you subtle messages that it needs attention. If you notice any of the following signs, your air conditioner may need some TLC.

Inconsistent Airflow

If the airflow in some of your rooms feels weak or the room doesn’t cool as well as it used to, you may need to clean your ducts and vents. You might also have mechanical issues, such as a blower motor that has lost its momentum.

Warm Air

If the air flowing from one or more vents is warm rather than cool or cool rather than icy cold, as it once was, your AC unit may need recharging. You could also have an obstructed vent or a faulty compressor.

Humidity Levels

If your rooms are more humid than usual, your cooling system may not be dehumidifying the room properly. High humidity levels can contribute to the growth of mold, which is a severe health hazard.

Leaks

If you notice puddles, moisture accumulation, or mold around your air conditioner, your unit may be leaking. This issue should be addressed promptly, as it can encourage mold growth, which has adverse health impacts.

Frequent Cycling

If your AC unit cycles on and off frequently, it strains the equipment and increases your utility bill. There are several causes for frequent cycling, such as:

  • Low refrigerant
  • Maladjusted thermostat
  • Incorrectly sized AC unit
  • Improperly sealed or closed window or door

Odors

If you notice unpleasant odors when your air conditioner is running, you may have mildew or mold in your ductwork or in the unit itself. Sometimes, it also indicates a problem with the electrical components. Strange smells shouldn’t be ignored. If there’s a problem with the electrical components, you need to fix it promptly so that a fire or other calamity doesn’t erupt.

Noises

Your air conditioner should be seen and not heard. If you hear banging, hissing, rattling, or any other odd noise, you should promptly call a professional HVAC technician. You may have problems with your blower, compressor, or other internal parts. These issues aren’t DIY fixes. You should only have a licensed air conditioning technician address them.
